No, your local physician does not need to complete any forms or questionnaires. The only request we will make to your local physician(s) is that they provide Opinion Diagnostics with copies of your medical records in a timely manner upon receipt of a request from us. One of our goals at Opinion Diagnostics is to make the Second Opinion process as convenient as possible for both you and your local physician.
As an Opinion Diagnostics Member, there are absolutely no costs for requesting or receiving a Second Opinion from a specialist. However, not every request may be processed and you may enroll a plan that provides access to the specialist.
While most diagnoses are confirmed by our World Leading Medical Centers, between 10% and 30% of the first diagnoses are changed upon review. Effective treatment relies foremost upon a correct diagnosis. In many instances even if there is agreement as to the diagnosis, alternative or other treatment options can be provided by a medical center that treats large numbers of people with similar conditions. This is often helpful not only for the patient, but also for the local physician. In most cases, it is very reassuring to the patients and their family members to find their physician and a leading expert both agree on the diagnosis and treatment plan.
A 2010 study of cancer patients nationwide by researchers at a leading university found that 1.4% of pathology results – or over 30,000 patients – were misdiagnosed annually. The same study also found that 20% of the recommended treatments for cancer patients were incorrect.
It is difficult to estimate an exact figure, but it is believed that several thousand patients each year are seriously misdiagnosed. “It translates to one patient a week coming into ICU with a wrong diagnosis,” says Philip Steinburg, a Professor of Pathology, Urology and Oncology at a State University, who has spearheaded much of the research on pathology errors. “If you’re that one patient it makes all the difference in the world.”

A Second Opinion provides you the confidence in your current diagnosis as well as provides you a way to correct misdiagnosis, access to new treatment options that your doctor might not have evaluated. It also fine tunes your treatment plan by using a scalpel instead of hatchet to address your current clinical conditions.
